A rectangular prism has a total 6 flat faces and all angles are at right angles as shown in the figure below. A rectangular prism consists of 2 rectangular bases and 4 rectangular sides. The bases are congruent and parallel to each other. Since every prism is a polyhedron (solid with flat faces), hence it does not consist of any curved sides. Parent Involvement in ADHD Therapy In previous posts, Ive talked about things parents can to do get reluctant teens to attend therapy sessions and what to look for when searching for a therapist. An additional consideration for parents of teens with ADHD is how involved they should be in their childs treatment once their child is attending sessions with a qualified clinician. When a younger child is receiving therapy for ADHD, theres no question that parents should be highly involved in their treatment. In fact, all evidence-based treatments for ADHD require parents to learn skills and strategies to support their child at home. But when it comes to teenagers, being involved in treatment can feel like more of a gray area for parents. After all, your teenager isnt a child anymore, and parents want to grant their teen a certain level of independence. Some parents also feel like it would be intrusive to be involved in their teenagers therapy sessions. They want their teen to have a relationship with their therapist that represents a safe space where they dont have to worry about what their parents think. While parent involvement in therapy for teens with ADHD isnt as black and white as it is for children with ADHD, in almost all cases, parents should still be moderately involved in their treatment that is, not quite as involved as they would be if their teenager were still a child, but not as hands-off as they would be if their teen were already an adult. Why? Treatment for teens with ADHD often includes strategies for creating additional structure and organization in their lives. This involves creating and sticking to routines that work at key times of the day, using tools for organizing and prioritizing their homework, strategies for organizing their possessions, and time management skills. Teens with ADHD are not typically capable of using these skills on their own at least, not right away. They need help from their parents in order to practice these skills until they eventually become habits. Therapists only see the teen once a week for about an hour. In order to make progress, teens need to practice their skills between sessions, and the therapist needs help from parents to hold the teen accountable. Many parents of teens with ADHD are highly involved in their day-to-day lives, in an effort to help them compensate for their ADHD symptoms. Ideally, parents will be able to scale back their involvement over time as the teen improves their own skills and becomes more independent. Knowing when and how to pull back as a parent is hard. Part of a teens therapy involves coaching their parents on how to best support the teen as they grow and change. While parents should be involved in their teens therapy, they dont usually need to attend every session. Its often important for the teen to have individual sessions with the therapist when they can discuss all the complicated and messy emotions and social situations that come up during adolescence. In general, its common for parents to either regularly join for a few minutes toward the end of a session, or to attend occasional scheduled parent-teen sessions that occur in place of the regularly scheduled teen-only sessions. When it comes to concerns that the teen wont fully open up to the therapist if they know that the therapist is also talking to their parents, more often than not, this isnt much of a problem. Teens can have a great open and supportive relationship with their therapist even if their parents are involved in some of the sessions. Therapists who work with teens are adept at laying clear boundaries, letting the teen know that they wont share anything with their parents without the teens permission (with a handful of exceptions, of course like if they express intent to harm themselves or someone else), and as long as the therapist demonstrates that they will stick to these boundaries, then teens come to trust the therapist in return. When it comes to finding a therapist who is a good fit for your teen, make sure to look for someone who connects with both you and your teenager. The results you see from therapy will so much greater when you are both involved. ABOUT DR. Grammar Schools Grammar Schools Grammar SchoolsSchoolsThe topic of grammar schools has always been a contentious one - by having what is effectively an entrance exam, do they pave a privileged path for certain children, leading them towards opportunity and prosperity, and consign those who did not perform well enough on that one day, when they were only eleven years old, to a second rate education? Many would say that this is being overly dramatic - there is, in theory, nothing subsidiary about state schools in comparison to grammar schools. A child of ability will flourish in any environment, as long as they are given opportunity: this is the power of education. Teresa May`s recent campaign to overturn the ban on creating new grammar schools has angered many people. Her most anodyne of opponents have stated that grammar schools do not actually provide better education, and a pupil who passes their eleven plus would do just as well if they attended a state comprehensive. The Education Policy Institute conducted a thorough data analysis, and concluded that `Once prior attainment and pupil background is taken into consideration, we find no overall attainment impact of grammar schools, either positive or negative.` More vociferous opponents of Teresa May`s proposal have said that grammar schools only help to widen the divide between children from affluent backgrounds, and those from average or lower income families. With grammar schools tending to crop up in more prosperous areas, it is easy to see the correlation here. There is also evidence that many teachers are drawn to grammar schools, as they relish the opportunity of working with children who are more intellectually able; and so there is an ever greater impoverishment of teachers to supply the needs of comprehensive schools. Teresa May has argued that increasing the number of grammar schools will enhance social mobility - a claim severely critiqued by many in the education sector. Malcolm Trobe, acting general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, has said, in reference to the Education Policy Institute report, `creating more selective schools will not raise overall educational standards in England and is likely to widen the attainment gap between rich and poor children,` The decision by Teresa May to increase the number of grammar schools is a radical volte-face, going against the policy of the last five decades. Since the late 1960`s there has been a trend towards comprehensive schools. Labour`s Education minister Tony Crosland launched a vehement campaign to `destroy every *expletive deleted* grammar school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.` This impassioned policy was much to do with reforming the ideology of privilege, as it was to reform the secondary schooling system. It was a bold riposte against the conservatism of his opponents, and until Teresa May`s September statement, where she said she would end the ban on constructing new Grammar Schools, it was the prevailing opinion of almost every subsequent political party. By the 1980`s most of the grammar schools throughout the United Kingdom had either closed, or converted to comprehensives. In the 1995 Labour Party Conference, the Education Spokesman David Blunkett promised that there wou ld never be an increase of selective schools under a Labour government. The history of state funded Grammar schools has its roots in the mid 1940`s. RA Butler`s 1944 education reforms mandated that every child of ability should have access to further education. As innocuous as this sounds today, it was such an important reform, because it stressed the ability of the child, over the affluence and social standing of its parents. The pertinent part of the reform here is `child of ability.` Only those children of sufficient intellect were guaranteed a place at a grammar school. The eleven plus exam was thus formed: if a child passed they would gain admittance to their local Grammar school; if they failed, they were for the local secondary modern school. As of 2016 there are only around 160 grammar schools in the United kingdom. Of course there are many private schools that have a rigorous selection procedure, but the trend for assessing and segregating children for their admittance into secondary state schools has been unpopular for many decades. Will Teresa May`s decision to permit the construction of new grammar schools be see as a progressive move? More and more teachers are including this factor to help incentivize students to speak up, ask questions, and contribute to communal discussion while in the classroom. It is also commonly included in online or hybrid-style classes where there is a requirement to post comments or reply to others in an online discussion book your private Orange County summer tutor today. Maybe you feel like theres never a good opportunity or opening in the conversation for you to contribute something. These are all common issues, and it is okay to feel this way. The advice that I give is simple: fake it. An easy and effective tactic to solve any of these issues is to come up with a question that you already know the answer to. Take something from the beginning of the lesson, or something you already understood, and ask about it anyway. This might seem counterintuitive, but heres how it benefits you: If youre shy or anxious, it takes a lot of the stress away by asking something you already know. Now, instead of having the anticipation of not knowing the answer and the pressure of having to try to understand and learn something new, you will know that you just need to ask the questions and allow your teacher to give a response you already understand. And, importantly, you will also be getting good practice at making yourself speak up. Its okay to have anxiety or feel shy in class, but you will need to be comfortable asking questions for when you do need help in the future. If you feel like you dont have any real questions, this allows you to get your participation points without the stress. You can ask simple questions that you know, or you can challenge yourself to come up with more complex questions. This can show off your knowledge by still being a question that gets you credit. Remember, the class participation points will help your grade, so you need to treat participating just like any other required assignment: make yourself do it. If youre embarrassed by the questions you have, this tactic will allow you to ask questions that you consider less embarrassing. If you feel embarrassed by easy questions, then ask something complicated that you do understand. Better yet, ask something complicated that you dont understand. Dont worry about the answers your teacher gives and dont worry about understanding. Remember that you are doing this for the experience and the participation grade. Consider listening to some of your classmates questions and mimicking the same types of questions they have. Doing this too, you will hopefully also start to recognize that theres no need to be embarrassed by your questions and that many of your classmates either dont care, have the same confusions themselves, or wont ever think about your question later. If you dont know how to speak up and find an opening in a class discussion, this can make the process easier. Often, a student will listen to the previous point and spend some time thinking about a related comment or question. In the meantime, however, the discussion has already changed topics and moved to something else. Now the student has to think of something new, only for the conversation to change again. Combat this by taking something straightforward that you understood and make up your mind to ask it early. Questions and comments like so it sounds like youre saying… do you mean that… and that seems similar to… are good roots. Similarly, you can purposefully misunderstand someone and ask about it. Remember, you need credit and practice. Your comments and questions dont need to be profound â€" they need to get you your points and make you more comfortable in the setting. Treat your class participation grade like the assignment that it is and get it done. This strategy of coming up with fake questions can make the task easier regardless of what you felt was holding you back before. It can also give you good practice with speaking up in class for when you do need to ask questions and get feedback. Remember, many students struggle with participation grades and thats okay if you feel that its difficult.
